What is CBD?
CBD is short for “cannabidiol”, one of more than 80 different cannabinoids found in the hemp plant and it is NON-Psychoactive
Naturally the body of all mammals produce cannabinoids involved in regulating physiological and cognitive processes, appetite, pain-sensation, mood and memory, through Endo-cannabinoid System (ECS). Offering CBD allows the ECS to work harder and be more productive.
CBD for horses is becoming more mainstream than ever before, that's because it works.
CBD brings hope for horse owners looking for a better and natural alternative to prescription medications.
How does CBD work on horses?
Research shows that horses like all mammals have an Endo-cannabinoid System (ECS) which produce the body’s own Endo-cannabinoid compounds, which science now knows play an integral role in maintaining the body’s homeostasis, meaning the ability of the body to function within safe limits
This system works with a network of receptors (CB1 and CB2) in the central and peripheral nervous systems. At the cellular level, it is hugely responsible for regulating balances in the body’s immune response, appetite, gut metabolism, memory functions and more.
-
CB1 receptors exist mainly in the brain and central nervous system. They impact areas such as appetite regulation, memory, emotions, and feelings of pain.
-
CB2 receptors are concentrated in the gastrointestinal tract and peripheral nervous system (nerve cells outside the brain and spinal cord) and modulate immune cell functions. When activated, they help reduce inflammation.
Endogenous cannabinoids are produced when the body signals that they are required, but are quickly degraded. Offering CBD (exogenous cannabinoid) allows the ECS to work harder and be more productive.

Is CBD safe for horses?
CBD has shown to have the same health properties for horses as it does for humans. All mammals for that matter would have very similar experiences when using cbd products. One thing to keep in mind is that our horse are bigger then us, so therefore you may notice our pet products have a higher mg per serving.
How to administer CBD to horses?
There are 3 ways to provide CBD:
Sublingual: Placing the drops under the tongue and holding them there for 30 seconds provides good bioavailability and kicks in quickly. This is maybe difficult to do for picky animals.
Oral: Adding CBD to food, or chewing a CBD pellets or swallowing a CBD capsule, maybe will take more days for the effects to become apparent, but this method is longer lasting than under the tongue. Pellets providing improved bioavailability and hence, lower effective dosing.
Topical: CBD balm or shampoo is absorbed well into the skin and is beneficial for targeted áreas.
CBD dosage for Horses. What is the right dosing?
Horses can enjoy daily, or on an as-needed basis. Add our easy-to-use drops to food and treats or squeeze directly into your horse’s mouth. Shake well before use.
Low Tier Single Dose (0.022 mg/lb or 0.05mg/kg):
This is where we recommend you start and you can keep your horse here while CBD builds up in their system which takes two weeks.
Average Tier Single Dose (0.068 mg/lb or 0.15 mg/kg):
The most popular dosage as it greatly helps with most conditions. 1 Full dropper of Corcel Oil 2000mg daily (1 ml)
Strong Tier Single Dose (0.136 mg/lb or 0.30 mg/kg):
Some conditions like severe pain, etc. sometimes require the strongest support and this is the dosage range for them. The maximum daily dosage for Horses, is 2.20 mg/lb or 1.00 mg/kg.
How Long Does It Take For CBD To Work?
This is a tricky question to answer since there are many factors involved in finding the most therapeutic dose of CBD for your dog. It can also depend on what condition you are using the CBD oil to help with. There is NOT always an immediate, drastic effect.
For anxiety problems, CBD oil typically can start to calm your horse within 30-60 minutes.
For more severe issues it may take 2 – 4 weeks for optimal results, especially as you experiment with how high of a dose your horse needs in order to get relief from his symptoms.
Remember that dosing CBD for a horse is not an exact science, you may need to go a bit up or down to find the sweet spot.
Can CBD get your Horse high?
Definitely NOT, hemp-derived CBD is high in CBD and THC free or very low in THC (less than 0.3%).
Horse competition rules and testing
The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the Federation Equine International (FEI) have strict rules regarding medicating horses before events. Recently, the USEF announced that as of September 1, 2019, positive test results for cannabinoids incur in violations.
USEF Equine Drugs and Medications Rules prohibit cannabidiols (CBD) and their metabolites. While hemp does not contain more than 0.3% THC, it does contain CBD. CBD, both natural and synthetic forms, are likely to improve the performance of a horse due to its reported effects. It is for these reasons that USEF prohibits CBD and all related cannabinoids. Horses competing under USEF rules who test positive for natural cannabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids and other cannabimimetics will be considered in violation of GR4.
Nonetheless, it is possible, so it is best to discontinue its use 7 to 10 days before an event. Even if you choose a CBD isolate or broad-spectrum product (which does not contain any THC), it is best to err on the side of caution by stopping before an event.
There are a lot of CBD products in the market and being informed is a great idea. In so, we suggest that you check to see if the company you are selecting from posts their COA (Certificate of Analysis) which is performed by a third party laboratory for its ingredients. At Miracle Nutritional Products, we have COAs for every one of our products. If you dont see our COA posted online, please send us an email.
CBD is legal in USA?
Yes, CBD is legal to purchase in almost all 50 states. In fact, in 2018 the U.S. Government ruled that the hemp based CBD (with less than 0.03% THC) is legal to sell and consume in any state. It is for this reason that CBD has become a very popular product in the last few years.
The FDA does not regulate it so it behooves you to choose a reputable company that is willing to disclose the source, extraction method, and analysis of their products.
